Night Watchman

Night Watchman is a cornfield shrouded in pitch darkness. The endless night and the absence of celestial bodies make this level extremely difficult to navigate without a light source. However, even with a light source, the plants—which grow 2 to 3 meters tall—will make it difficult for survivors to find their way. The ground in this level is quite deep mud, making travel quite difficult without proper footwear. Survivors may also encounter man-made structures, such as barbed wire fences, wooden crates, and damaged huts, scattered randomly among the dense vegetation. Occasionally, survivors may find a somewhat open path, but this path is known not to lead them toward an exit from the level. Additionally, the level lacks essential resources, so survivors must conserve their supplies. Small amounts of corn can be found, but unfortunately, this corn is inedible as it will cause digestive issues for survivors.

The limited field of view while exploring instills a sense of anxiety and fear to survivors, especially those new to Backrooms. This fear is felt intensely due to fleeting glimpses of something or the sensation of being watched. The level is considered a “trial level” for newcomers to Backrooms; this perception stems from the level’s nature, which instills fear of the uncertainty lurking behind dense foliage, causing new survivors to panic and struggle to think clearly—it’s often noted that only a few new survivors will ultimately survive this level.

Various attempts to simplify navigation and reduce the likelihood of getting lost have been made by those who have visited this level before, but the results have always failed due to numerous factors: ranging from technical glitches to strange phenomena that seem to originate from the level itself. Compass needles will spin in circles, flashlights won’t be able to illuminate far enough as if their light is being absorbed by the darkness, directional markers will vanish, and radios will be filled with loud, strange noises. Because of all this, survivors can only rely on courage and luck when exploring this level.

Entrances and Exit

Entrances

To enter the level, survivors must make their way through the tall thicket of brush in Level 1-ID; they will find that the surrounding environment gradually transforms into the setting of Night Watchman. Another way to access it is by entering the cornfields in various outdoor-themed levels such as Land of Earth and Megamendung.

  • In Saneless Show, doing noclip on the television showing a cornfield at night with a red dot in the sky will transport survivors to this level. A similar image can be found as a painting in Balihud Hotel.
  • There is a weathered wooden door in Shortcuts; entering this door will lead the survivor to this level.
  • Burying oneself in a pile of corn in Black Shrine will lead the survivor to this level.

Exit

Survivors must find a concrete building so tall that its peak is invisible; its location is also not fixed, so survivors must rely on luck to find it. Entering its entrance will lead survivors into the Crematorium. This building cannot be seen from a distance and only becomes visible once you are close enough to it.

Survivors cannot return to Level 1-ID once they are inside this level.
