Description

High-Density Residential—commonly referred to as HDR—is a complex of houses where all the buildings are connected to one another by a door or a short hallway. Each house has its own unique characteristics, both in terms of interior design and floor plan, but the overall appearance is reminiscent of the retro-style homes from the 1970s to the 2000s. Every house has working electricity and running water; food can also be found in the refrigerator—it refills itself within a few hours—there are clean clothes in every bedroom closet, and limited supplies of gas and oil are available.

Every house discovered so far has only one floor, and no houses in a damaged or derelict state have ever been found. Each house appears ready to be inhabited, as the furniture and rooms are in pristine condition. However, unlike other settlement-themed levels, the presence of Backrooms-specific objects—even common ones like Almond Water—has never been discovered. The presence of entities has also never been reported, leading to the belief that this level is entirely safe from entities. Due to the absence of Backrooms-specific objects and entities, this level has become one of the levels with conditions most similar to Earth.

Windows and open gaps facing the exterior of the building can be found in some houses; the view that survivors see outside the building is a small open space located between the buildings. This open space is usually difficult to access due to physical barriers such as iron or wooden bars, and it is overgrown with grass or small trees, lacking any distinctive features. Survivors will also find that this level is always in daylight, though no one has yet managed to see the sun in the sky because it is blocked by roofs or taller walls. On the other hand, weather phenomena such as rain and strong winds can also occur.

Radio and television are the only ways to obtain information throughout this level. On the radio, broadcasts are usually scheduled at specific times by a community of survivors within the level who have managed to build a makeshift radio station, so signal interference is constant. On television, information is broadcast randomly and typically consists of short, disjointed clips of unknown origin or context. This means survivors usually only use the television to play a recording or simply to create the illusion of life inside the house.

Bases, Outposts, and Communities

Due to its relatively safe nature and stable resources, this level is gradually being adopted as primary living spaces by survivors.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

This level can be entered by noclipping through visually damaged furniture, after which survivors will be sent to this level at a random location. Similar furniture can also be found randomly in many levels, such as inside some houses in Megamendung and as some wooden furniture in Red School.

Exits

To exit this level, survivors simply need to find locations with visual anomalies, such as hallways, doors, rooms, or furniture. Noclipping at these locations will send survivors to a random other level—but it will always be an indoor-themed level. In a small number of locations, survivors will be sent to a specific level—not a random one; these locations are marked and indicated to survivors who are merely passing through this level.
